NNENNA’S POV
Dubem and his wife urged me to push with each contraction. With a few pushes, our daughter was born. Then I wished I had just one baby so I’ll know the contractions would reduce but that wasn’t the case.
The contractions continued for over 30 minutes as Dubem’s wife attended to our daughter. She had specialized in pediatrics and knew exactly what to do to keep our daughter safe until I got to a hospital.
40 minutes after our daughter was born our son came forth. I delivered the placenta shortly after and Dubem heaved a sigh of relief. I heard Dubem say now I can take that honeymoon in peace.
He deserved it after all. Chiemerie was at the door of the bedroom crying due to my screams. I asked them to let him in because Dubem locked the door.
He ran in and saw me and ran over to me. I told him I was okay and he had two younger siblings and he was a big brother.
He ran over to where Dubem’s wife had placed his siblings in the Baby cot I purchased when I had him.
Thankfully I came with my baby bag because I knew the baby could come at any time. Dubem cleaned me up to the best of his ability and told me we were heading to a hospital.
He told me I had a tear that required stitches and he didn’t have the equipment to use.
He woke up Ikenna who was acting so confused and we headed to the hospital with Chiemerie. He was so embarrassed.
He couldn’t look at me. He promised to stay by my side to make up for his absence during Chiemerie’s birth.
I wasn’t mad at him because he was present. Just a few men can handle seeing a baby’s head coming out to be born without passing out. I held his hand and told him it was okay.
In the video Ijeoma was heard abusing Chioma Gerald’s fired staff, calling her a fool. I told you negative things about Chikanma, did I ask you to abuse her and pick a fight with her? You did that to yourself. You fired yourself. Don’t you have sense? How can you pick a fight with Gerald’s wife when you work for her husband? Are you alright? I didn’t send you on that errand so don’t blame me for the loss of your job. I confided in you as a friend, now because of you I have lost any chance of getting back with Gerald.
We arrived at the hospital where Dubem worked. They teased him by telling him his apartment was now a hospital. I got stitches and my babies got checked and I got to hold them for the first time along with Ikenna.
I could see the fulfillment in his eyes. He asked me what we would name them. I told him I didn’t know yet.
Chiemerie was grinning from ear to ear. He told me he wanted a baby sister, God gave him both a sister and a brother. I longed for another son, and Ikenna longed for a girl. God gave us both our heart desires.
Ikenna whispered to me saying we are not having any more babies, I told him it was not true.
He said after what I witnessed today we are done and it is final. Dubem informed our parents and soon they were at the hospital.
My dad said already? Two babies just how? My mum was dancing while singing songs of praise. She said my omugwo has already begun. My dad said better respect yourself.
I pulled Dubem close and thanked him, telling him to go be with his wife. I said thank you to her and apologized to her for the inconvenience. She told me she understood and it was fine.
Dubem told me to call him if his attention was needed. He left with his wife. My Mum spent the night with me in the hospital while Ikenna took Chiemerie home.
I was discharged and spent a few days in Dubem’s apartment before heading home. My mum had to go home with my dad before coming over to my home with Ikenna.
NICOLE’S POV
Bernard’s Siblings pleaded with their mum to forgive their father and take him back because he needed her.
You are all selfish, she ranted. Listen to yourselves. For many years your father has been with another woman.
None of you thought it wise to talk him into taking me back. You all let him marry that woman until she left on her own.
Now you think he needs me. Who would take care of him you all ask, who has been taking care of me?
You all abandoned me after I raised you all single-handedly.
You don’t even send me money or call me. You left me all by myself.
If not that I planned for this phase of my life I’d be begging now.
None of you are in a position to tell me what to do. He is your father by the way so take care of him.
I thought it is said that many separated and divorced women are living in regrets so why does he need me?
He should be doing well by himself and attracting other women.
I forgave your father a long time ago, but my forgiveness has a clause.
I’ll offer him whatever assistance I can offer him, but I’ll never take him back or live with him under the same roof.
He crossed a lot of lines he shouldn’t cross because he felt he is a man and can do whatever he likes.
Getting involved with other women meant we can’t be man and wife again.
He even asked that my bride price be returned so what are you all blabbing?
He is your father and my advice is you take him to live with one of you.
You can draw up a roster and decide whose house he goes to at different times.
No ooo they all exclaimed, we can’t have him in our homes.
You can’t have him in your home Bernard’s mum asked? You can’t have him in your homes but you want me to take him back.
You better get him some domestic workers because I’m never taking him back and that’s final, this case is closed.
I watched Bernard as his family members argued over the video conference call.
They looked so selfish, not willing to do anything to assist their father.
Expecting their mum to take their dad back despite all he had done.
It reminded me of Bernard, pleading with me not to leave after misbehaving.
He may not have done what his dad had done but he hurt my feelings. I just felt cheated by him.
Allowing me to do all the chores and also cater to the family’s finances was so cruel. I felt he knew exactly what he was doing.
I never wanted him to get off the hook easily. He was so cunning and could as well be playing me.
Bernard’s mum got so upset with her children that she left the video conference call.
When she left Bernard asked them what they’d do to assist their dad.
His other brothers suggested that their sisters take care of their father because they were women.
Their sisters shot back and told him they were all their dad’s children so no one was exempt from taking care of him.
Besides, they all had their families to take care of so their father couldn’t be just the responsibility of female children.
I left the bedroom where the video conference call was going on and called Bernard’s mum.
She sounded very upset because of her children.
I calmed her down and pleaded with her to still assist her husband in any capacity because her children weren’t going to assist him in any way.
They were simply giving clumsy excuses and passing the buck around.
The following day when Bernard left for work. I left the house to visit my parents without telling him.
CHIKANMA’S POV
Someone filmed it and uploaded it to social media.
She was even planning on getting back with Gerald. It didn’t surprise me.
I was beginning to feel so exhausted and sick. I was in denial about being pregnant. I just wasn’t ready.
I wanted to enjoy bonding with Gerald on a different level. He never pressured me for a baby but I knew he wanted us to have a child together.
He loved Jared and Jane but he wanted our child together. He always lit up each time a friend had a new baby and we went visiting.
He would talk all week about how he couldn’t wait to carry his baby.
After my denial waned I took a home pregnancy test. It turned out positive. It didn’t surprise me.
I felt so exhausted and sluggish. I thought of a special way to break the news to Gerald. I didn’t want to do ordinary things.
I came up with sending him a text message with codes for him to decode using alphabets. I sent him numbers that translated to I’m pregnant in words. I added a tip that read “decode the words”.
He called me immediately to ask what it meant. I told him to figure it out. Oh c’mon just tell me, my brain isn’t working today.
Decode it when it starts to work I said. Sweetheart c’mon don’t do this he said.
Babe a whole you who codes can’t decode that simple code? Babe, I told you my brain isn’t working today. I’ll wait till it works. It means so much for you to decode it yourself.
I worked around the clock to come up with that code. Please decode it or give it to Jared. I’m sure he can help. You are not nice Gerald said. I’m truly not feeling nice today, I said.
What is wrong with you? You’ve seemed off lately. The results of your overtime are beginning to show.
My overtime? What exactly are you referring to? Your brain is truly not working today.
Let me let you reboot. Chai this is a technical knockout you’ve given me. Goodbye baby I said.
I just needed to lie down and rest. Gerald got home later. The chef had made dinner and left.
Gerald’s warm embrace woke me up. Are you okay he asked? I’m fine, I just needed some rest, I lied.
He felt my temperature and said your temperature seems unusually hot. I think we should see a doctor.
No, I don’t need a doctor, I protested. Okay fine, let’s watch it a little but I don’t like your sluggishness. It’s affecting me.
It’s your fault I’m sluggish. My fault? Ha! What do you mean? Don’t worry baby, your brain is not booting at all today.
He shook his head and said I don’t understand you today. Do I fix you dinner?.
No, it’s fine, I’ll serve myself and the children. No, I’m fine. I can serve you dinner. No baby I insist please lie down, we’ll sort ourselves out.
Two days went by and Gerald still hadn’t figured out the code. At some point, he started to beg me to tell him what it was. I told him I couldn’t.
The following day he called me in the afternoon. Babe where are you? At home, I responded. Are you serious? Yes, I’m serious.
Cool please don’t go anywhere. He was so excited. I could feel it. I’m on my way, please don’t go anywhere. Don’t let me look for you.
I laughed and said babe please drive carefully and get here alive. I don’t want to receive another heart-wrenching call, it may just kill me. I’ll try, he said. I knew he had decoded that code.
He arrived with a broad smile on his face and a spark in his eyes. You, he said with his hands in his pocket. Why couldn’t you just tell me in plain simple English? Tell you what?
Stop feigning ignorance, you gave me sleepless nights. Like you are making me have sleepless nights too. He shook his head and said why did you decide to punish me? Punish you? I did no such thing.
