SEE FINISH BY TREASURE EZURUIKE EPISODE 30
NNENNA’S POV
We are not dating. She’s good at her job. She stopped by my home at the beginning of therapy when I didn’t want to go back after I was confronted with the gravity of my wrongs.
I assure you she helped me get over the guilt I felt. She’s not among the women I got entangled with.
Whatever I said. I’m sorry. Stop apologizing to me.
An hour later we heard a knock on the door. Ikenna opened up and it was Nneka. Good evening she said to me as she hugged Ikenna.
She sat down and asked what my exact problem was. I explained it to her. I was scared of being strangled after I returned officially to Ikenna.
Ike, what do you have to say? Ikenna said Nnem, I know I failed you. I made a mistake and I regret it. Please forgive me.
I know the statistics and know that I could be leading you on but I’m not.
I’ve been alone with you for some time now but I’ve not attempted to kill you. I won’t kill you.
How do I know? I asked. I’m so concerned about it because if you kill me my dad will kill you too.
Take her with me as my wife or what? if you don’t want her, then send her out the street then bring in some other woman like your father. I don’t care if you want to destroy your marriage with your two hands, don’t get me involved. What do you mean by “take her with me”? Meaning what? Who the hell do you think you are?
I am very sure about that. He looked at me in shock. Chiemerie will become an orphan.
I wouldn’t want that for him; his two parents should remain alive and divorced.
I don’t want that. I want my family reunited. I am reckless each time I remember we are apart.
I will let you sort yourselves out, Nneka said. You should know that Ike has been in therapy for a while.
Why is she calling him Ike? I said to myself. He wants to become a better man. She added
Ike, I believe you should give her something to believe. Convince her without reasonable doubt.
How will I do that? Ikenna asked? I don’t know but I am sure you will figure it out.
I will take my leave now but you must know that what is happening now is pretty normal.
The last memories she has of you is one of violence and she has been away from you for a while.
Those memories have stuck to her and they look like they have become reality.
It is up to you to change her perspective and replace those memories with something more loving and happy.
I wish both of you well. I will be available to attend to you if the need ever comes up but for now, I believe I better get going.
As she left Ikenna said I am sorry. Please can you just stop with the apologies? You know I am not angry but worried. Just stop apologizing.
Ikenna fixed a date with my parents and took me along. He shocked me when he went on his knees and apologized to my parents.
He shocked even dad. What is the meaning of this? Dad barked.
Leave him alone mum shot back. That is how he feels comfortable.
Just let him be, he is pouring out his heart and his emotions.
Ikenna apologized to my parents and gave them his word that he will never lay a finger on me.
He offered to sign an undertaking that he will never hit me again. I was in tears.
Dad walked over to him and asked him to get up. Don’t try this again.
How can you get on your knees like we punished you? Leave him alone mum said again. Ikenna was in tears.
Dad said I will hold you by your word. You don’t need to sign any undertaking.
I believe you have learned your lesson, now and you have turned a new Leaf.
I wouldn’t want a marriage between you and my daughter where an undertaking will be signed.
It won’t look like marriage anymore and I know it will keep my daughter uncomfortable.
I want to believe that your change is genuine. When you are ready you can come with your family. Let us sort out this matter finally.
Thank you so much sir Ikenna said. Mum offered us lunch and petted Ikenna saying he was welcome.
We set off back on and Ikenna kept catching glimpses of me as he drove. Please don’t let us crash. I said.
He smiled at me and said I won’t. He drove me to Dubem’s apartment and dropped me off.
Dubem returned with Chiemerie. I missed him as he missed me.
Ikenna spent some time with our son before he headed home.
He spoke to his family and fixed a date to meet with my own family.
Ikenna’s family wore a frown when they came for the reconciliation talks.
Ikenna was all smiles and for that reason, I didn’t care about the facial expression of his family.
NICOLE’S POV
You’ve not brought any money for upkeep for the past 3 weeks as Nicole told me.
You’re not doing what she was bringing to the table.
She’s doing all the chores and carrying a family’s financial responsibility.
You’re inviting the devil into your marriage. A few years from now you’ll look back and regret it.
Then it’ll be too late because a lot of things would have come into play.
I think I’ve said enough to both of you. I think I want to take my leave now so you can decide what you want to do.
Since you’re supporting her mum, I suggest you take her with you because I will not have anyone challenge my authority in this house.
Bernard’s mum walked downstairs and drove away.
Bernard looked at me in shock because of what his mother had said: “destroy your home with your own two hands”. If you want to do it leave me out of it.
He dropped his bag and left the house to meet his friends and complain to them about what has been going on in his usual way.
Bernard could never resolve any issue by himself. His friends all lashed out at him. They told him so many unprintable words and he was shocked.
He expected to get some sort of support telling him to send me packing but instead, they told him how they were disappointed in him, they expected better from him.
They said “are you not the one who took your wife out a few days ago? You couldn’t hang out with us you, told us you were taking her out to appreciate her for all she does.
Three weeks later you’re telling us you switched roles with her to prove to her that what she does is nothing. Are you alright? Did you meet someone who messed with your brain and your thinking Faculty?”
His friends called me to inform me about their discussion. They apologized to me and pleaded with me to forgive him.
They advised Bernard to sort out issues with me. They told him “If he was mad at me for some reason he should tell me what the matter was and sort out the differences because a broken home is not a place to be.
Bernard’s mother showed up at his father’s house and was surprised to find the house in a mess. His father was surprised to see her.
She told him she came to help so she went around the house and got chores done.
She went to the market to purchase food items. She cooked meals for him.
He apologized to her in tears for the way he behaved and for his reckless behavior.
She told him she didn’t come for an apology. “I came to help and she had done her job and she was leaving”.
He asked her to stay but she said she wasn’t interested in staying. She wanted to leave because they were not married and they couldn’t be under the same roof.
He told her it didn’t matter because she is his only wife. She told him that was not.
“I am not your wife let alone your only wife. We are not married, you ended the marriage.
Your other wife slept with you and you had children with her.
Doing that broke the bond that we shared as husband and wife.
The Bible supports ending a marriage only as a result of infidelity and adultery which you have done so many times.
Please we are not married. I didn’t want to come here and you start being all mushy and sorry.
You’ve had a lifetime to apologize to me but you refuse to do it.
I came here because our son Bernard has followed in your footsteps and is about to end his marriage like you.
I was hoping you reach out to him and talk some sense into him so he doesn’t make a mistake.
Hopefully, he can take a leaf from what your life currently looks like and see where the future is headed.
He is feeling so full of himself and so proud because he’s a man just like you felt.
I think I’ll leave now. I’ll be in touch if you need my help in any way. You can let me know if I’m free I’ll stop by and assist you, have a great evening and she left.
Bernard’s father called him immediately while he was on his way back from being torn apart by his friends.
He was talking to his Dad as he walked into our sitting room. His phone was on speaker.
He told him he saw his mother today and she told him he was about to make the same mistakes he made.
His dad said “I had to call you immediately because I don’t want you to tow in the same path I towed.
please sort out any differences between you and your wife. I’m begging you, do not let it get out of hand as mine did.
I was so proud to retrace my steps whenever issues came up between your mother and me.
Please look at me now, all alone. Despite all the money I have. I have no one to call my own.
All the children are grown and out in their own homes, and your mother who I married is no longer with me.
My second wife left me too. My only option is to remarry. Will I keep remarrying different women?
Right now I’m lonely. I never hoped or imagined that my life would look like this so I’m begging you.
I know you must be feeling that you are the man, you have the money and you are in charge but that is not all that matters.
At the end of the day, you will feel the effect in ways you never imagined that’s all I called to say.
I’m not bothering you. I’m not calling to invite you because I don’t hear from you.
You never call me, notwithstanding I had to reach out to you. Have a nice evening.
CHIKANMA’S POV
Nkem and I started to try for the third child before he passed. I don’t know, I said to Gerard.
What do you mean by you don’t know? he responded.
I already have two children so I don’t think it’s my place to decide for you. I will just go with what you decide.
I don’t agree with that, he said. I would like to get a number from you, he said. How many children would you like to have?
You’re the one who’s going to get pregnant and carry those children. You should have a say in it too.
it’s not about me, I said but your mother. My mother? He asked with surprise written all over his face.
Yes, your mother. You should consider her too because you are an only child and I’m sure she will like so many grandchildren.
Wow, I didn’t think about it that way. I think you should forget about my mother for now he said. How many children would you like to have?
How many children would you like to have? I directed the question back at him.
Honestly, I would love two children, he said. Cool that works for me but I still believe you should ask your mother.
I’m not saying we’ll have the number of children she wants, it’s just to carry her along, that’s just my suggestion.
me I’m saying it because my mum had just the two of us, my brother and me.
She wanted more children but unfortunately, she didn’t have any more children until my dad passed.
When I got married to Nkem I asked her because I knew she loves children.
She told me she wanted 6 grandchildren from me and another six grandchildren from my brother.
She imagined the 12 of them coming to visit her during the holiday. Like a community or football team.
I could see the joy on her face and the happiness she felt.
Then she told me she knew I couldn’t have six children but she felt happy I was asking her opinion.
She asked Nkem and me to have the number of children we wanted to have. My husband and I agreed on having four children.
Unfortunately, we could have just two before he passed.
I think you should ask your mum because in your case you are her only child. Just carry her along that’s what I think.
Why don’t we just ask her now, Gerald said. Sure I think you should, I responded. He picked up his phone and called his mum.
Why are you calling me at this point? Does your wife know you’re calling me?
Calm down mum he said, I just want to ask you something. What is it she asked?
I’m just wondering how many grandchildren you’d like me to have, excuse me! His mum exclaimed.
Yes Mum I am your only child so I would like to know how many grandchildren you will love to have.
Gerald’s mum thought for a while, carefully calculating what she was going to say to her son, and then she said I would love five grandchildren.
5? Gerald exclaimed! Yes, 5 Gerald’s Mum reaffirmed. Mum, you want to kill my wife? he responded.
His mother had a good laugh and said you asked me my honest opinion and I gave it to you. Now you’re asking me if I want to kill your wife.
I don’t want to, but you are my only child and I have always looked forward to the day the house will be filled with grandchildren.
I have no intention of putting any pressure on you but you asked my opinion so I gave it to you.
Besides we already have two so at least I’ve got some people to play with now until you make it up to 5 so let’s say 3 I bet I’m considerate now.
Goodbye mum Gerald said and I had a good laugh laughing at his facial expressions.
I imagined how his mum would have laughed and probably rolled on the floor.
I didn’t blame him because he wasn’t used to it but the truth is that we say all these things like it’s only up to us.
We have to consider other people even though I understand it depends on your financial capability. It’s a thing of joy making our parents happy.
He turned to me and said can you do five children?” I asked him if there will be triplets and then twins? I’m serious, he said.
I don’t know what I can do, I responded. Pregnancy is pretty tough on me.
I guess time will tell, but just know we can’t have one child it’s pretty obvious.
You know I’m just concerned about you. I know how stressful pregnancy can be and I’m thinking about you doing it five times. Relax, I said we don’t have to have five children.
