A long-distance relationship is a relationship between two people who are geographically separated from each other.
Personally, I’m not keen on it. A lot of people believe that it’ll never work and I won’t blame them.
A long-distance relationship is worth the work if both individuals are committed to keeping the relationship alive. It takes a different kind of commitment than a relationship in closer proximity.
Long-distance relationships fail for several reasons especially mistrust, silence, lies, deception, lack of attention, etc.
If you are interested in a long-distance relationship avoid excessive communication. This seems like a joke right. Communicate regularly but not every second and every minute.
Set ground rules to manage your expectations. Agree on what is acceptable and what’s not.
Know each other’s schedules. This will be helpful to know when to communicate. If someone is at work and can’t talk know that so you won’t feel ignored.
Avoid doing things that will create mistrust and disagreements.
Have a goal in mind. How long will this long-distance relationship last? Because it can’t go on forever.
Be on the same page about everything. Don’t be thinking about marriage while the other person is thinking about a career.
Enjoy alone time with family and friends. Still have a life to attend events with family.
Stay honest with each other. Address feelings of fear, insecurity, jealousy, and others.
Don’t start a new relationship and deceive someone until a surprise marriage photo surfaces online. It’s better to end the relationship and be termed wicked than trending for betrayal and lies.
Keep track of each other’s social media activities. It’ll help you know what each person is up to.
A long-distance relationship is struggling when one or both individuals start making excuses to communicate.
When you don’t communicate like you used to.
When one person becomes less accessible for no explained reason.
When one person starts making plans that exclude you especially if previously you were involved in such plans.
When no attention is being paid to you. Every little thing leads to a misunderstanding.
There’s a high level of insecurity and mistrust. There’s a long silence from one end irrespective of efforts to reach out.
When you don’t even know any member of each other’s family and efforts to discuss such topics leads to misunderstandings each time.
Above all know when a long-distance relationship won’t work and stop wasting valuable time.
Ensure to end such a relationship to avoid the other party holding on to it not knowing it has died a natural death.
